Swelling at the point of the elbow

The swelling at the point of the elbow sits on top of the bone, not inside the joint. That is why the elbow still bends fully, and why what the elbow rests on matters more than any medicine.

Do not wait for an appointment

  • The swelling is red, hot, and very tender, or you feel feverish
  • There is a graze, cut or boil in the skin over it
  • You are diabetic, or on steroids, or your immunity is low, and the area is red
  • Red streaks spread up the arm from the swelling

Do this

  • Work out what the elbow is resting on. Desks, autorickshaw and car window edges, study tables, and long phone calls with the elbow propped are the usual causes
  • Pad the elbow, or change how you sit, for the next few weeks
  • Ice it for 15 minutes, two or three times a day
  • Have it looked at if it is red or hot, or if you are diabetic — infection here is common and needs deciding early
  • Mention it if you have had gout. Gout causes this swelling too, and that changes the treatment

Avoid this

  • Leaning on it and carrying on
  • Squeezing it, or trying to drain it yourself
  • Heat on a red or hot swelling
  • Tight bandaging around the elbow
  • Assuming the joint is damaged. The swelling sits on top of the bone, not inside the joint, which is why you can usually still bend the elbow fully

The questions everybody asks

Why is my elbow swollen but not stiff?

Because the swelling is outside the joint.

There is a thin cushion over the point of the elbow, between skin and bone. It fills with fluid when it is irritated. The joint underneath is usually untouched, so bending stays normal. That is a useful sign, not a puzzle.

Is it infected?

Redness, heat and fever say yes.

A simple irritated bursa is a soft, fairly painless swelling. An infected one hurts to touch, is red and warm, and often follows a small break in the skin. If you are diabetic, assume it needs checking rather than watching.

Should the fluid be removed?

Sometimes.

Where infection or gout is a question, taking a sample answers it. Draining a simple one gives relief but it refills if the leaning continues.

Will it come back?

If the elbow goes back on the same table, yes.

The single thing that prevents recurrence is changing what the elbow rests on.

On cost: if we suggest a scan, an injection or an operation, ask us what it costs and what happens if you do nothing. We will answer both. You should never feel pushed into spending money.

Consultation is ₹500 for a first visit and ₹300 for a follow-up, the same at both clinics. For anything else, ask at the desk or on WhatsApp before it is done — we will tell you the exact cost.

Should you come and see us?

A page is a starting point, not a diagnosis. If the pain is not settling, come in and have it looked at properly — bring any X-ray, MRI or CT films you already have.
