Ganglion (wrist lump)

A smooth, firm lump on the back or front of the wrist, or at the base of a finger. It is a sac of joint fluid — harmless, and it often disappears by itself.

Do not wait for an appointment

These suggest it is not a simple ganglion.

  • The lump is hard, fixed, or growing steadily
  • It is painful at rest or at night
  • Numbness or weakness in the hand
  • The skin over it is red or hot
  • The lump is anywhere other than around the wrist or fingers

Do this

  • Leave it alone if it does not bother you — that is a legitimate choice
  • Tell us if it changes in size, becomes painful, or affects your grip

Avoid this

  • Hitting it with a book. This old remedy sometimes works, often hurts, and can cause bruising or injury
  • Having it removed simply because it is visible — recurrence is possible
  • Assuming any lump is a ganglion. If it is hard, fixed or growing, it needs checking

The questions everybody asks

Is it cancer?

No — a true ganglion is not.

But that is exactly why any lump that is hard, fixed, growing or painful should be shown to us rather than assumed.

Should I have it removed?

Only if it hurts, limits you, or is pressing on a nerve.

Many disappear on their own. Surgery has a recurrence rate, so it is not worth doing for appearance alone.

Can it be drained?

It can, but it frequently comes back.

Aspiration is quick and sometimes worth trying; excision has a lower recurrence rate but is a bigger step.

Guides for you

In your language, free to download. Each one is a short PDF you can keep on your phone or print.

On cost: if we suggest a scan, an injection or an operation, ask us what it costs and what happens if you do nothing. We will answer both. You should never feel pushed into spending money.

Consultation is ₹500 for a first visit and ₹300 for a follow-up, the same at both clinics. For anything else, ask at the desk or on WhatsApp before it is done — we will tell you the exact cost.

Should you come and see us?

A page is a starting point, not a diagnosis. If the pain is not settling, come in and have it looked at properly — bring any X-ray, MRI or CT films you already have.
