What it feels like
A finger that will not straighten. Gentle stretching can help maintain hand flexibility, though it won't reverse the underlying cord. Move slowly and stop if any exercise sharply increases your discomfort.
Also called: finger bent cannot straighten
Come in sooner if
rapid progression, a new tender lump, or increasing difficulty placing your hand flat on a table — these are worth discussing at your next visit, or sooner if rapid.
The exercises we give you
- Palm-Up Finger Stretch
- Finger Extension with Band
- Composite Fist
- Tendon Glide (Fist Sequence)
- Table-Top Hand Stretch
- Finger-to-Thumb Touches
Your handout shows how to do each one. How many, and how often, is set for you at the clinic — it depends on the stage you are at.
Living with it
Do this programme once or twice a day. These exercises support flexibility and comfort; they do not straighten an established cord. Let your doctor know if you can no longer place your hand flat on a table, as this is a useful marker for discussing further treatment options.
