Neck pain

Most neck pain comes from muscles and joints. It is not usually a trapped nerve, and it is not a sign that your neck is wearing out.

Do not wait for an appointment

These are uncommon — but they need to be seen now.

  • Your hands have become clumsy — you are dropping things, or buttons and coins have become difficult
  • Your handwriting has changed
  • You have become unsteady on your feet, or you are bumping into things
  • Weakness in an arm or hand that is getting worse
  • A change in control of your bladder or bowels
  • Fever, or losing weight without trying, or you have had cancer in the past
  • The pain started after a fall or an accident
Sheet 01 · Neck exercisesNeck & backUsually settles in 2–6 weeks

Do this

  • Keep the neck moving. Gentle movement in every direction, several times a day
  • Heat before you move — a warm bag or a hot shower
  • Simple painkillers taken regularly for a few days, not only when it is bad
  • One pillow, not three. Sleep on your back or side, never on your stomach
  • Bring the phone up to your eyes instead of bending your neck down to it
  • Raise your screen so the top of it is at eye level
  • Start the exercises on Sheet 01 once the worst has passed

Avoid this

  • A soft collar. It feels comforting and it delays recovery — we do not recommend one
  • Paying for a scan in the first six weeks
  • Forceful neck manipulation or cracking while it is acute
  • Sleeping on your stomach
  • Waiting until the pain is gone before you start moving

The questions everybody asks

Do I need an X-ray or MRI?

Almost certainly not.

Scans of the neck show wear and tear in nearly every adult over forty who has no pain at all. A scan will usually find something — and that finding was probably there last year too. We scan when there is a reason, and we will tell you plainly if there is one.

The report says cervical spondylosis. Is my neck degenerating?

No. That phrase describes normal change with age.

It is the neck equivalent of grey hair. It appears on the reports of enormous numbers of people who have never had a day of neck pain. It does not predict your future and it does not mean surgery.

Is the pain going down my arm serious?

Usually not — and it usually settles.

An irritated nerve root causes pain, pins and needles or numbness down the arm. Most settle over weeks to a few months without surgery. It is weakness that is getting worse that needs urgent attention, not pain.

Will I need an operation?

Very unlikely.

Neck surgery is for specific problems — mainly a nerve or the spinal cord under pressure that is not settling. It is not an operation for neck pain on its own.

On cost: if we suggest a scan, an injection or an operation, ask us what it costs and what happens if you do nothing. We will answer both. You should never feel pushed into spending money.

Consultation is ₹500 for a first visit and ₹300 for a follow-up, the same at both clinics. For anything else, ask at the desk or on WhatsApp before it is done — we will tell you the exact cost.

Should you come and see us?

A page is a starting point, not a diagnosis. If the pain is not settling, come in and have it looked at properly — bring any X-ray, MRI or CT films you already have.
