Hip arthritis

Pain felt in the GROIN and the front of the thigh, with stiffness putting on socks and shoes. Hip arthritis is often mistaken for back pain — and back pain is often mistaken for the hip.

Do not wait for an appointment

These are uncommon — but they need to be seen now.

  • The hip is hot and painful with a fever
  • You suddenly cannot bear weight
  • Severe night pain that does not ease in any position
  • Pain after a fall, especially if you are older or have osteoporosis
  • You have had cancer in the past, or are losing weight without trying

Do this

  • Keep walking. Regular, moderate walking helps
  • Strengthen the hip and thigh muscles — Sheet 33
  • A stick in the hand OPPOSITE the painful hip
  • A long shoehorn, a sock aid, and a raised seat — these restore independence more than any tablet
  • Swim or cycle if walking is too painful
  • Simple painkillers before the activity you know will hurt

Avoid this

  • Sitting in very low chairs — getting up becomes the hardest part
  • Stopping activity altogether
  • Assuming groin pain must be a hernia
  • Deep squatting if it provokes severe pain

The questions everybody asks

Is it my hip or my back?

The location of the pain is the best clue — and if we are unsure, we can settle it.

Hip arthritis is felt in the GROIN and thigh. Back problems usually radiate down the back of the leg past the knee. When someone has both, an injection of local anaesthetic into the hip will tell us which one is causing the pain — and that prevents the wrong operation.

When should I have a replacement?

When pain stops you sleeping and living, not when the X-ray looks bad.

Hip replacement is one of the most successful operations in medicine. But the timing is yours — the X-ray does not decide.

Will I be able to sit cross-legged and use an Indian toilet afterwards?

Honestly — cross-legged sitting and floor level activities are restricted, and squatting deeply is usually not advised.

We tell you this BEFORE the operation. If your home, meals or prayer happen at floor level, tell us, and plan for a commode and a chair in advance.

On cost: if we suggest a scan, an injection or an operation, ask us what it costs and what happens if you do nothing. We will answer both. You should never feel pushed into spending money.

Consultation is ₹500 for a first visit and ₹300 for a follow-up, the same at both clinics. For anything else, ask at the desk or on WhatsApp before it is done — we will tell you the exact cost.

Should you come and see us?

A page is a starting point, not a diagnosis. If the pain is not settling, come in and have it looked at properly — bring any X-ray, MRI or CT films you already have.
