What it feels like
Pain along the front of the shin. Reducing load temporarily and building calf/shin flexibility and strength gives the best results. Move slowly and stop if any exercise sharply increases your pain.
Also called: shin pain, pain while running
Come in sooner if
pain in one specific pinpoint spot on the bone (rather than a general area) that is worsening despite rest, or numbness/tightness in the leg during exercise that eases with rest — these need further evaluation to rule out a stress fracture or other cause.
The exercises we give you
- Calf Stretch (Straight Knee)
- Calf Stretch (Bent Knee)
- Toe Raises
- Ankle Circles
- Calf Raises
- Calf Self-Massage (Roller)
Your handout shows how to do each one. How many, and how often, is set for you at the clinic — it depends on the stage you are at.
Living with it
Do this programme once or twice a day. Temporarily reduce (not necessarily stop) running/impact activity, and cross-train with low-impact options like swimming or cycling. When you return to running, increase your distance/intensity gradually rather than jumping back to your previous level.
