After a Fracture

Your fracture is healing, and now the focus shifts to restoring movement and strength to the muscles and joints around it — stiffness and weakness after a cast or surgery are normal and expected.

What it feels like

Getting movement and strength back. Follow your surgeon's specific instructions on weight-bearing and timing, which always take priority over this general guide.

Also called: after fracture, after plaster removal, stiffness after cast · फ्रॅक्चरनंतर

Come in sooner if

increasing pain, new deformity, or a 'give way' feeling at the fracture site, fever or wound discharge, or new numbness/weakness — these need urgent review.

The exercises we give you

  1. Compression (If Advised)
  2. Gentle Range of Motion
  3. Isometric Strengthening
  4. Gradual Weight-Bearing
  5. Return to Function

Your handout shows how to do each one. How many, and how often, is set for you at the clinic — it depends on the stage you are at.

Living with it

Progress through these steps in the order and pace your surgeon advises — moving too fast risks the healing bone, moving too slowly leads to unnecessary stiffness. Mild discomfort during exercise is normal; sharp pain is not.

Come and be examined

A handout is a starting point, not a diagnosis. If the pain is not settling, come in and have it looked at properly — bring any X-ray, MRI or CT films you already have.
