Osteoporosis

Bones thin silently with age. There are no symptoms until something breaks — and a bone that breaks after a minor fall is the warning sign that should never be ignored.

Do not wait for an appointment

These identify who is at risk.

  • You have broken a bone after a simple fall from standing height — this is the single most important sign
  • You have lost height, or your upper back has become rounded
  • Sudden severe back pain in an older person, often with no fall
  • Early menopause, or long-term steroid tablets
  • A parent who broke a hip
Sheet 50 · Bone strengthening and balance exercisesBone & joint diseaseTreatable, and treatment measurably reduces fractures

Do this

  • Ask for a bone density scan if you have broken a bone after a minor fall
  • Weight-bearing exercise — walking, and resistance work. Bones respond to load
  • Adequate calcium in food, and vitamin D — sunlight and supplements
  • Balance training to prevent falls — this matters as much as the medication
  • Check your home for loose rugs, poor lighting and slippery bathrooms
  • Take the medication as prescribed. It works, and it is usually stopped too early

Avoid this

  • Treating the broken bone and ignoring the bone disease. This is the most common failure in medicine and it leads directly to the next fracture
  • Assuming bone thinning is simply age and untreatable
  • Stopping treatment after a year without discussing it
  • Avoiding exercise for fear of breaking something

The questions everybody asks

I broke my wrist. Why are you talking about my bones?

Because a wrist fracture after a minor fall is often the first fracture — and the next one may be a hip.

This is the single most valuable conversation in this whole clinic. Treating the bone after the first fracture measurably reduces the risk of the second.

Does the medication really work?

Yes — it reduces fracture risk substantially.

It is not dramatic to take and you will not feel different, which is why people stop. The benefit is in the fracture that does not happen.

Should I be worried about the jaw problem I read about?

It is very rare at the doses used for osteoporosis.

Have a dental check before starting, and tell your dentist you are on treatment. The risk of not treating thin bones is far greater.

On cost: if we suggest a scan, an injection or an operation, ask us what it costs and what happens if you do nothing. We will answer both. You should never feel pushed into spending money.

Consultation is ₹500 for a first visit and ₹300 for a follow-up, the same at both clinics. For anything else, ask at the desk or on WhatsApp before it is done — we will tell you the exact cost.

Should you come and see us?

A page is a starting point, not a diagnosis. If the pain is not settling, come in and have it looked at properly — bring any X-ray, MRI or CT films you already have.
