Diabetic foot care

If you have diabetes, the nerves in your feet may not warn you when something is wrong. A small injury you cannot feel is how most serious foot problems begin — and daily looking prevents them.

Do not wait for an appointment

A diabetic foot problem is never something to watch for a week.

  • Any break in the skin, blister, crack or ulcer — however small and however painless
  • Redness, warmth or swelling anywhere on the foot
  • A hot, swollen foot even without pain — this can be a serious bone problem
  • Any discharge, smell, or black area
  • A sudden change in the shape of the foot
  • New numbness, burning or tingling

Do this

  • Look at both feet every single day, including the soles — use a mirror or ask someone
  • Feel inside your shoes with your hand before putting them on, every time
  • Wash daily, dry carefully between the toes, and moisturise the skin but NOT between the toes
  • Cut nails straight across
  • Wear footwear indoors too. Keep a pair of chappals by the bed
  • Have your feet examined by us at least once a year

Avoid this

  • Walking barefoot, indoors or out — this is where most injuries happen
  • Hot water bottles, heaters, or hot sand. Test bath water with your ELBOW, never your foot
  • Chemical corn caps or corn removal solutions
  • Cutting your own corns or calluses
  • Waiting to see if a small wound heals. It will not, and every day matters

The questions everybody asks

It does not hurt, so is it serious?

A painless wound on a diabetic foot is MORE serious, not less.

The absence of pain means the nerves are damaged — which is exactly why it will be walked on and why it will get worse. Never use pain as your guide here.

What if it heals?

We say "in remission", not "cured".

A foot that has ulcerated once is at high risk of doing so again. The daily checks and the footwear continue for life.

Is special footwear worth the money?

In your case, yes — and this is the exception.

We advise against custom insoles for most foot pain. But for a diabetic foot with previous ulceration or deformity, proper therapeutic footwear genuinely prevents recurrence, and it is worth every rupee.

Pictures, how many and how often, and what it should feel like. Free, and printable.

On cost: if we suggest a scan, an injection or an operation, ask us what it costs and what happens if you do nothing. We will answer both. You should never feel pushed into spending money.

Consultation is ₹500 for a first visit and ₹300 for a follow-up, the same at both clinics. For anything else, ask at the desk or on WhatsApp before it is done — we will tell you the exact cost.

Should you come and see us?

A page is a starting point, not a diagnosis. If the pain is not settling, come in and have it looked at properly — bring any X-ray, MRI or CT films you already have.
